Design Fair Paris by Les Puces du Design proposes, within its next edition from November 22nd to 25th at Espace Champerret, a route of remarkable pieces, highlighted by specific signaletic, selected on the various stands among the hundreds of exhibitors, passionate design antique dealers, who all, according to their tastes and affinities, participate in the discovery of movements and designers that will be unanimously recognized only in the future.
This is notably the case of Pierre Chapo's furniture, which has remained highly confidential for more than 40 years and is now enjoying renewed interest; for the moment mainly with specialists and professionals but, certainly also soon, with the general public.
Born in 1927 and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Pierre Chapo goes in parallel to his studies from 1949 to 1958 to make many trips abroad, during which he will discover the creations of big names in design like Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright or Charlotte Perriand, but also to perfect his knowledge in the field of craftsmanship.
It is in woodworking that he will practice his art, in his first workshop, that of his father-in-law, located in Clamart and then in Gordes. With clean forms and a particular care given to the work of the proportions but also the details of assembly, the creations of Pierre Chapo display simple lines, robust and timeless as well as a quality which explains today the interest that one gives to them.
This release from anonymity officially began in 2017 with the first retrospective of his work on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of his death, by the Magen H Gallery in New York; exhibition accompanied by a monograph, the first, written by Hugues Magen. Since then, the price of his furniture has been increasing; like the table T14 which is a good example of its production. Entirely made of solid elm, its thick plateau with rounded and sloping edges is characteristic of the work of Pierre Chapo. Thanks to the thickness of its tray, this dining room table designed in the 70s to accommodate 6 guests can be used without tablecloth to enjoy the beautiful patina of wood, any task that may be, if necessary, remove by light sanding of the surface. Its clean lines and its base composed of two feet connected by a high cross also make it a very nice piece for an office, and, in view of evolution of prices of Pierre Chapo works, will not fail to also constitute a very good financial investment!
